Mary Leinard, Principal

On behalf of the staff of Yokota Middle School, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the school's website. I think you will find our website helpful in learning about our school and its programs.

There is no greater undertaking for any society than the education of its children. Education is about discovery. At Yokota Middle School students are able to discover their special skills and talents and teachers encourage students to pursue those skills and to set high standards for themselves.

I believe that every student should have access to a positive, clean, safe, and secure environment. Yokota Middle School provides just that environment. Yokota Middle School has a culturally diverse student body with a dedicated and supportive staff.

The student population's cultural diversity allows students to learn about each other’s heritage and become members of a global society. Our teachers strive to differentiate instruction and better meet the individual needs of our students. The classroom environment is intended to provide the students with an opportunity for optimal growth, both educationally and socially. We have an outstanding professional staff who are dedicated to the middle school concept working together on academic teams. They communicate high expectations to their students and provide the experiences that allow the students to meet those expectations.

YMS is a dynamic school that supports grades 6 through 8. We are located on the outskirts of Tokyo, Japan, one of the most exciting cities in the world. As you prepare to come to Yokota Middle School please let us know and we will assign a White Tiger Ambassador to you. Your ambassador will take you around the school and introduce you to life at YMS. We will do everything we can to make your time at our school exciting and rewarding. We will also try to make you the very best student you can be.

YMS is one of the newest schools in DoDDS Japan, opening in the fall of 2000. We have a fully equipped facility with modern classrooms, science laboratories, band and chorus rooms, gymnasium, and information center to accommodate learning. Our school offers the same general curriculum as schools throughout the United States. The curriculum is supported by state-of-the-art technology. The school has computers for student use with connectivity to the school-wide LAN and the Internet. YMS has 375 students with 26 classroom teachers, plus nurse, librarian, guidance counselors, psychologist, technology education instructor, computer teacher, special education instructors, physical education instructors, and Host Nation teacher to support the curriculum. Students have the opportunity to be involved in a wide array of activities. We offer yearbook, student government, drama, clubs, tutoring, newspaper and an extensive intramural program after school. You can find out more information about the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), its curriculum, policies and procedures at http://www.dodea.edu.

I believe a strong relationship between the community and the school will provide the best educational opportunities for our students. A mutual understanding and appreciation of goals and programs is necessary for excellence in education. We have an active School Advisory Committee (SAC), Parent Teachers Organization (PTO), and many volunteers who work in concert with the school to enhance the educational programs and foster good student behavior and citizenship. As partners in education, we share a common concern for the educational growth of the students. The school has an excellent relationship with our military base officials, who provide excellent support to the school and play an important part in the educational program. I am looking forward to working with each and every one of you toward building a strong partnership for the education of our children. Together we can provide an excellent education in a nurturing environment for all children.

As you read about our school, its policies and procedures, formulate questions about the things you would like to know more about. Please feel free to contact me at the email address on our home page for clarification of any issues you may have.

Cordially,

Mary Leinard
Principal
